This project displayed how frequently Freud's defence mechanism are utilized in the media. We got to choose a character from a movie or TV show, and analyze how their id, ego and super ego interacted with one another and what coping mechanisms they used. Grey’s Anatomy is a TV show that focuses on a cour member of doctors at a hospital in Seattle. The show starts by having the main character, Meredith Grey work as an intern with 4 for others by her side. One of the other interns is Izzie Stevens. They all go through a lot on this show and as they grow Izzie seems to hit a rough couple of patches. After the first hit, when her patient who turns fiance dies, after she does something that should have worked, but if she haven’t done it, he would have lived longer. She falls into depression and denial, over what happened and what she did, she soon comes back with the help of her friends and not wanting to fall behind at work. Meredith is the only one of her friends who seem to figure out that Izzie just isn’t ready to be back at work yet, which leads to more issues and more drama. This show is full of drama, comedy, and the characters are all well rounded out, although, it has its ups and downs and everything has their own personal stuff going on which always seems to unravel in the best way possible, which is what makes the show so good. Denial: After her patient turned fiance, Denny dies ( S2, ep 27).It hits Izzie hard, he was supposed to get better and then suddenly didn’t. Izzie denys Denny’s death, she doesn’t believe that he is really gone, even after standing over his body crying, and refusing to get off the bathroom floor for a week after his death. Her id is saying that she needs Denny in her life, which makes her think he’s still there, her superego is trying to come to terms with everything going on, trying to keep her sane and the ego is trying to convince her that Denny is actually dead, but is losing. She even starts to see him again, she can talk and touch him and it’s like he’s actually there. Everyone is trying to convince her that he is dead and comfort her about it, but she refuses to accept it, and she even goes back to work faster than everyone thought. He followed her to work, they were still talking and she still believed he was there even though even sign said otherwise. It wasn’t until another life changing event occured for her to realize that it was all in her head. Rationalization: Once denny died everyone tried comforting Izzie about it, but she would just say how they’re making it up and he’s still there, resulting in herself feeling better and less anxious. She tries to make up stories about why everyone is says he’s dead, in a way to try and comfort herself without coming to terms with the fact. She tries to blame everyone else for what happened and doesn’t want to face the truth, she doesn’t want to admit that she could have done more to save him and should have done more, she blames everyone else for their mistakes. She is just trying to push the blame off her because she knows that it is partially her fault. Reaction Formation: Doing the opposite of what you feel like. After a week of just lying on the floor, Izzie decides that it's time to return to work. She is greeted by her friends and she seems to be handling things well, when suddenly a group of other doctors walk by talking about her falling for a patient and how she broke the rules and should be fired. Although she was clearly taken back by this she puts on a brave face and faces the day. Her id is probably wanting to run and break down in a corner and cry, but her ego realizes that that would make her look weak and it would make her friends think that she wasn’t ready for work. She uses reaction formation to hide what she's really feeling from her friends and herself. Regression: Being in a less developed state. Once Izzie gets back to work, she has fallen behind from the rest of her class by missing so many days. She is taking short cuts and snapping at people that don’t deserve it, she is thinking that she owns the place and the worse thing that could’ve happened, happened, so now she doesn’t care about what is going on around her. She acting like a child, talking back to her boss’ and doing what she thinks is best, not what the patient wants. Her id is is saying do what you want, who cares and her superego is fighting back saying don’t say these things and just sit back and watch what you’ve missed, so they compromise and she acts like a child. She also don’t fully know what she's doing because of everything she’s missed, so she’s under a lot of pressure to act a certain way and everyone is bossing her around to try and help, so she uses regression to escape the feeling of not being under her own control. Sublimation: Izzie is like a whole new person she returns from work, she doesn’t talk about Denny and is really mad all the time, even to people who don’t deserve it. Izzie uses sublimation towards the doctors in a lower class then her, she yells and doesn’t teach them what she should be and is also yelling at patients and getting mad at them for no reason. It’s almost like she feels sort of inferior towards everyone from missing so much and her superego is thrown off by this. She attempts to rebalance everything out, so to avoid the feeling of mediocrity towards everyone around her. Although Izzie went through a lot and dealt with it in many different ways, she also grows as a person and friend. She learns so much from this and becomes an overall stronger person. She reminds us that no one is perfect and even the most perfect things don’t always go the way we want them too, but we can always learn from our past and grow from it to know more about the future.

We created a powerpoint exploring one category of drug, including what drugs fall in that category, how they work, what damage they cause and what affects they have both short and long term. I completed this assignment in a group of 2 containing Emma and myself.
This assignment introduced the topic of personality by letting us reflect on our own personalities, values and traits and also what influences them. We created word clouds as visual representations of our own personality traits and values and reflected on the connections and influences between the two.
This assignment gave us the freedom to choose to investigate a online test that interested us and how it was related to psychology. I chose a test called 16 Personalities and assessed the tests validity and also analyzed the results it produced. Test 1: ENFT-A Test 2: INFP-A 1. What type of test was it? The test I took was called “16 Personalities”. 2. Who created it? It was created by NERIS Analytics Limited 3. How/for whom would the be useful? It would be useful to the people who would like to find out what type of personality they have and get a little in sight on who they are and help with curiosity. This website also allows you to take other tests about learning who you are, and I don’t think one certain famous test influence this small organization, I think they just wanted to help people find themselves. 4. Was your test credible? I think that is test was credible because it didn’t have any ads on the website and it was very neat and organized. Although once you received your result you could share on facebook, so maybe facebook advertises this test. 5. Is your test reliable? I think this test is reliable, it gives you another look on yourself and goes into depth with the description. There is definitely a more accurate and descriptive test out there, but for free, I’d say this one was really good. Although I got two different results, I did put in a couple of different answers because I took them on different days and a few questions could have gone either way. 6. Is your test valid? The test is valid, the test told me it would tell me my personality type and it did. The questions it asked were directly linked to your choices and how you would handle a situation and just who you are. Link:https://www.16personalities.com/ 1) Are the defense mechanisms the same in humans and animals?
2) How do sleep paralysis and other sleep disorders happen? Why do they only happen to some people and not others? 3) If you take a personality test twice and get different results, does that mean that you could have just had different answers or you are a mix of personalities? |
